American Military Operation on Caracas Raises Fears of Future Danish Territory Annexation.

Recent American strike in Venezuela and the capture of its president have ignited unease regarding America's ambitions on the Arctic territory. Followers of the former president's political movement have allegedly turned their attention to the vast landmass in the wake of the operations in South America.

Inflammatory Messages and Official Outrage

Only a short time following the commencement of the Venezuelan operation, a prominent conservative podcaster, who is married to a senior presidential aide, posted a symbolic image. The graphic showed Greenland draped with the stars and stripes, accompanied by cryptic message: "COMING."

This overt suggestion to annex the mineral-rich land, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, triggered swift and strong criticism from Denmark's representatives.

"Denmark and the US are strong partners and should keep cooperate as such. American security is equally the Arctic's and Denmark’s security," stated the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States work together to ensure security in the North."

The diplomat additionally pointed out that the kingdom had significantly boosted its military budget this year, allocating a large amount specifically for Arctic and regional security. "Furthermore, we demand full respect for the sovereign borders of the Kingdom of Denmark," he emphasized.

Political Moves and Strategic Interests

The tensions were additionally exacerbated by the previous naming of a US state governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The governor had publicly thanked the president, saying it was an "privilege" to work in a volunteer capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."

Following the events in Venezuela, this representative praised the president's actions, connecting it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Ever since returning to office, the American leader has repeatedly alarmed European partners with his expressed interest in Greenland. The territory is viewed as critically important for national security and potential mineral exploitation. It currently hosts the northernmost US military base.

Refusing to Rule Out Military Action

In a significant television interview, the president refused to exclude the resorting to armed action to gain control of Greenland. This stance comes during intensifying global competition in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He described Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for international security."

Mounting Friction and Indigenous Opposition

In reaction to this persistent "rhetoric" of threats, Denmark's intelligence service took the unprecedented step last month of classifying the United States as a "potential threat."

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland issued a unified and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland shows a complex sentiment. While a overwhelming percentage of the territory's residents seek independence from Denmark, there is also little to no desire to become part of the United States. The territory has had the option to seek independence for many years.

Analyst Assessment: A Credible Scenario?

Military experts are increasingly re-evaluating the possibility of such a action. One policy director specializing in military analysis conceded she had previously dismissed the rhetoric but was "now not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to station a couple hundred or a couple thousand soldiers on Greenland, and it's not clear to me who could do anything about it," she concluded.
