Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
