A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
