Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such treatments must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
