The English and Welsh Pitted in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales find themselves placed in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a highly-anticipated pool stage encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw mirrors their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group once again, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing win, with Scotland unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks until the final, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the pools conclude according to the current global standings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of England and Ireland until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Opener

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match aimed at jump-start the event.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six group winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
